The Serengeti ecosystem, stretching from central Tanzania to southwestern Kenya, is home to the largest concentration of wildlife in the world. The Maasai Mara Nature Reserve is the northern "bottle neck" of this ecosystem and it has plentiful game throughout the year. As such, it is a "must" for the visitor to Kenya.
The "Mara" has been the subject of many wildlife films, not only because of the full range of animal species which roam its plains, but also because it is "photogenic" - rolling hills, speckled with acacia, interspersed with green pastures, and framed by the backdrop of the Oloololo Escarpment.
The Mara hosts a substantial population of black-maned lion who become particularly "active" during the annual "wildebeest migration" (August, September, October), when literally over a million wildebeest head north to feed on the lush grasses of the Mara plains. This spectacle is not to be missed, especially when thousands of these creatures attempt to cross the Mara River in a wild stampede.
The "Big Five" are all present in the Mara and the more common species, such as topi, various, various gazelle, giraffe and zebra can all be found in large numbers. Moreover, some three hundred bird species have been recorded in the area.
Goesafaris has secured several exclusive camping concessions in the northern section of the Mara, set in secluded groves. These sites allow you to be near the action, but away from the "mini-bus crowd". Our classic tented safari is still the most memorable way of experiencing the drama played every day in Maasai Mara.
