Ever since George and Joy Adamson stayed in Meru during their "Elsa" and "Born Free" years, Meru National Park has been a favorite with wildlife aficionados, and yet, surprisingly, it is still off the beaten track.

Meru possesses a harshness similar to Samburu, and it is therefore frequented by species adapted to arid areas: Gerenuk, Grevy's Zebra, Oryx, Somali Ostrich and Reticulated Giraffe. Birdwatchers will delight in the Golden Breasted Starling, African Finfoot, and Pale Chanting Goshawk.

Meru is blessed with a network of fifteen rivers flowing off the Nyambweni Hills. Riverine vegetation abounds, including Doum and Raphia Palms, Baobabs, Figtrees and Acacia, which, as a whole, define the classic scene of "wild Africa".

There are only two lodges in Meru and tourists are sparse. In your tented camp under the trees by one of the rivers, you will therefore be able to enjoy a solitude and privacy which Kenya can still offer - if you know where to go.
