camera If your going to be taking photographs while on safari, plan ahead what you really need. Some tourists load themselves down with an excess amount of equipment which would only be used in limited situations. A well planned combination of camera, lenses and films can fit a variety of situations. It can be difficult to switch cameras and lenses frequently and quickly in a safari vehicle, and you should be considerate of the space you share with others. Try to balance the enjoyment of seeing the animals in their natural environment with bringing home a picture to show your friends.
A 35mm SLR camera with a normal lens and a telephoto lens will cover most situations. A UV filter is also very helpful. Bring more than one speed of film, since drives take place at different times of day; 400 ASA at sunrise and dusk, 64 to 200 for midday. Keep the film cool and dry if possible, and avoid leaving rolls in direct sunlight. Plastic sealable bags can keep the dust out of your film.
A word of note when photographing individuals. Many native Kenyans believe that being photographed robs them of their soul. Respect their desire not to be photographed. Always ask before taking a picture. Some individuals will pose for a fee. Children may allow you to take their photograph in exchange for some spare change.
