![]() Security
Crime is relatively low in Kenya compared to many American and European cities.
Still, caution is always a good idea when carrying valuables, particularly in Nairobi and on the Coast.
Thieves will try to take advantage of new arrivals to the country who have not yet gotten their bearings.
Be wary if you are taking public transportation.
Carry your passport, money and documents in a pouch under your clothes, either around your neck or waist.
Take advantage of hotel safes when available, and never leave cameras or handbags unattended.
Avoid traveling alone or after dark, particularly in remote areas along the Coast.
If you go out in the cities at night, carry only as much money as you will need.
In Nairobi you may run into some form of con artists.
After spotting you as a tourist, they approach you with any number of stories trying to separate you from your money.
The best thing to do is ignore these requests and keep moving along.
Common sense will keep you out of most of these situations.
Likewise, muggings can also be avoided with some sense.
Don't wear your wealth openly when walking down the street.
Leave valuable jewelry at home, keep small change for making purchases and keep most of your cash tucked away, keep cameras out of sight.
