Tips for Travelers
Flying is the most convenient way to get to Kenya. Nairobi is the main city to fly into and out of the country with Mombasa being the entry point for travellers to the coast. Look for advance purchase tickets, which usually require buying the ticket at least three weeks in advance. This can save a great deal over economy class tickets. Stand by tickets are also cheaper, but international flights are typically scheduled only once a day and flights out of Kenya are often overbooked. For the same reason, when you leave Kenya arrive at the airport early to check in and guarantee a seat.
Kenya Online includes links to online ticket agents that can quote rates and even reserve tickets for airline travel. Check travel magazines and sections in newspapers for specials, although these are not as common for flights to Africa. If you are flying from North America, you may be able to save on the leg to Europe. In Europe it is possible to get cheap tickets from "bucket shops", which are travel agencies that specialize in discounted tickets. Be prepared to do some research to find the best deals. Kenya Airways has connecting flights to the main cities of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Malindi. Book well in advance and reconfirm two days in advance.
Go on Safari!
No trip to Kenya is complete without a safari, and the quality of yours can be greatly affected by the company you choose. The main differences are the quality and type of vehicle used, the quality of food, and the skills and knowledge of the drivers and guides. Better companies plan ahead for all the contingencies which may come up on your safari. Try to deal directly with the company which operates the safari. If you go through an agent company and something goes wrong, there is likely to be little recourse.
